On the run on the weekends

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

I suppose weekends are supposed to be relaxing, but on Saturday morning, I'm on the run.

Literally on the run! On Saturday morning I do my longest run of the week, and I usually end the run at Starbucks. I hang out there for awhile by myself (bliss!) and wait for the family to drive and pick me up.

That means that feeding the kids breakfast on Saturday is usually up to The Engineer, my husband. Thankfully, since we already have such a simple breakfast routine, The Engineer can open the pantry and find convenient choices. He can give the kids cereal and milk or granola bars and know that they're getting a healthy breakfast.

Sundays are always busy as we try to get out the door for church. So we rarely have any special breakfasts on the weekend. We just choose from our easy options so that we've got the fuel we need to enjoy our time together as a family!

Congratulations to commenter #47, Eva, who said her key to a good morning is, "Make sure to get enough sleep the night before!" Wise words, Eva! I may be a mom of two, but I agree--I value my sleep!

My key to a good morning

Lately, my key to a good morning is this...

Photobucket

That's right--a computer that's turned OFF. It's amazing how I can think, "Oh, I'm just going to check one thing on the computer..." and two hours later, I'm still sitting there still staring at the screen!

So lately I've started most mornings by doing something productive, usually something I'm not too excited about and want to get out of the way...like cleaning bathrooms or dusting or starting laundry. After that, it's time to get myself and the kids ready for the day. I like to get some quiet time to nurture my spirit. And then it's time to sit down in front of the computer.

It's amazing what a difference this little change has made for me! I'm less stressed out and feel better about myself on the days when I get moving and get something done.

Of course, in the midst of all this productivity, the kids and I still need to eat! We are not the type of family to skip breakfast. Sometimes I eat breakfast early; sometimes I grab something when I'm sitting down to relax after getting things done. Zoodle's usually hungry soon after getting up; Chickie sometimes waits a little longer. Whether it's Kellogg's Frosted Flakes or toast or granola bars...the kids and I nearly always eat breakfast!

School? What's that?

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

Psst...Be sure to keep reading 'til the end for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card! GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.

When we're visiting my husband's parents and my kids are being particularly...uh, challenging...my mother-in-law is fond of saying conspiratorially, "I've always said that school comes just in time."

And even though I'm a self-proclaimed "happy mommy" who loves staying home with my kids, I'll admit...I'm looking forward to them being in school! Having a few hours during the day to get things done without wiping noses and breaking up arguments? Sounds good to me!

Chickie starts kindergarten in a year, and I suppose if she was scared of the prospect, I'd be nervous too. But she is so excited. She'd love be in school now, but she doesn't turn five until January. I think her first day of school next year will be a highly-anticipated, super-exciting experience. And I think she'll do well in school. When she gets in trouble, it'll probably be mostly for talking too much!

Zoodle is too young to be thinking much about school, but if his love for his Bob the Builder backpack is any indication, he'll be excited to start too, three years from now!

For this week's "Mom's Breakfast Club" post I'm supposed to be writing about transitioning into the school year. For us, though, the "school year" is pretty much the same as the rest of the year. We get up, eat an easy breakfast, and the kids relax in front of PBS Kids TV shows while I do a bit of house cleaning...or check email, blogs, Twitter, etc.

But when they do start school, I'm going to want to be sure the kids have a good breakfast first. I am someone who gets hungry quickly, and I remember how long school mornings can feel before lunchtime rolls around! Recently Kellogg's sent us a box of Frosted Mini Wheats Big Bites, and the kids like it. I imagine that's the type of cereal we may encourage them to eat before school starts...something with some substance too it, that will "stick to their ribs" while they wait for lunch. Add some whole grain toast and juice, and hopefully they'll stay alert even without a morning snack!

Summer recap

We had a great summer--especially the 2 1/2 week trip we took in August to visit my parents and my husband's parents! These were some of the highlights of that trip:

Playing in the ocean
Waves tickling toes
Love for Grammy & Sampa
Grows and grows and grows

Time with Mom and Dad
Was a treat for me,
Plus time with my old friends
And with my cute hubby.

In northern California
We got a needed break
From humid summer weather
(And Hubs swam in a lake!)

When Grandma played with them,
The kids had so much fun!
And Grandpa's blueberry pancakes?
Zoodle ate a ton!

The memories we make
On trips to see the fam
Make me very thankful
Of just how blessed I am!

I've been thinking about breakfast lately because of this blog series. While we had a few special breakfasts during our trip (like donuts and those fantastic blueberry pancakes), most mornings we stuck to easy, healthy options like cereal.

Thankfully both sets of grandparents had a nice variety of cereals for us to choose from. My in-laws had a box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes that had some pictures of old-style Kellogg's Corn Flakes trucks, and those pictures really caught Zoodle's attention! He kept asking for "the truck cereal." I wasn't sure if Corn Flakes would be an interesting enough flavor for his discriminating toddler palate, but he liked them!

My husband happened to turn on a documentary on cereal while we were in California, and I learned that Kellogg's Corn Flakes was the first cold cereal ever produced. It's pretty cool to see that after all these years, it's still popular...and it's even tasty enough for a two-year-old!
